History of Agriculture
This site is about the development of agriculture in South Australia. It contains photos, articles and historical information. The many stories include contributions made by the Department of Agriculture.
From the early days of the colony agriculture supported the state's economy by providing food and fibre for domestic and international markets. Farmers have used innovative approaches to manage adverse seasonal conditions, market pressures, infertile and erodible soils, globalisation and changing population patterns due to immigration.
Material presented on the History of Agriculture in SA has been prepared by volunteers, mostly former members of the Department.
